How Alexander describes Elderton:
"A benchmark of Barossa heritage and old-vine character. Elderton captures the depth and generosity that have defined the Barossa Valley for more than a century. Both Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon are produced at this historic estate, each bottle unique and tells of the story of a sense of place. This is benchmark Barossa, but just not as you know it."

Elderton Wines is one of the Barossa Valley’s most respected family estates. Established in 1979 by Neil and Lorraine Ashmead, the winery began with the purchase of the historic Nuriootpa vineyard, home to some of the region’s oldest Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon vines. Planted in 1894, these venerable vines form the foundation of Elderton’s identity and its reputation for producing powerful yet balanced Barossa wines.
A true Barossa family estate, Elderton remains owned and operated by the Ashmead family. Today the second generation—brothers Cameron and Allister Ashmead—oversees both viticulture and winemaking, continuing the commitment to estate-grown fruit and traditional Barossa character. Their vineyards include parcels of exceptionally old vines, some dating back more than a century, which contribute remarkable depth, concentration, and structure to the wines.
Elderton is best known for its classic expressions of Barossa Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon, wines that capture the region’s hallmark richness while maintaining balance and precision. Among the most celebrated is the Command Shiraz, sourced from the estate’s 1894-planted vineyard and widely regarded as one of Australia’s great single-vineyard Shiraz.
Through careful vineyard stewardship and deep respect for its historic vines, Elderton continues to craft wines that reflect the depth, generosity, and enduring heritage of the Barossa Valley. Today, the estate stands as one of the region’s benchmark family producers, producing wines that honor both Barossa tradition and the Ashmead family legacy.
