Stefano Lubiana is one of the most quietly influential names in Tasmanian wine. Founded in 1990 by Steve and Monique Lubiana, the estate sits in the Derwent Valley just north of Hobart, on a south-facing slope overlooking the Derwent River. Steve is a fifth-generation winemaker of Italian heritage — his father Mario emigrated from Istria after the war and established a wine estate in South Australia's Riverland. Seeking cool-climate terroir to make wines of true finesse, Steve and Monique chose Tasmania on their honeymoon in 1988, purchasing the Granton site two years later and planting their first vines the following spring.
The wines are made with an uncompromising commitment to place. Steve and Monique were Tasmania's first certified biodynamic vineyard, achieving Demeter certification in 2013 after nearly a decade of transition. Every vintage is farmed by lunar and cosmic cycles, harvested by hand, and vinified in a purpose-built gravity-fed winery — a philosophy of minimal intervention that lets each site speak for itself. A second vineyard at Cradoc in the Huon Valley was added in 2015.
Stefano Lubiana's Pinot Noirs have won Best Biodynamic Wine in the World at the London International Wine Challenge on three separate occasions — a testament to the estate's clarity, transparency and precision.
Today, son Marco carries the family legacy into a sixth generation, continuing his parents' pursuit of what Steve calls, simply, perfect wine.
