Neudorf is one of New Zealand's founding names in fine wine. Established in 1978 by Tim and Judy Finn, the estate sits in the Moutere Hills at the top of the South Island, in the small region of Nelson. Tim was an animal-behavioural scientist turned pioneering vigneron; Judy, a former journalist. Together they left conventional careers behind, drawn by the deep clay-gravel soils of the Moutere Valley and the long sunshine hours of Nelson. Their first vines were planted on the slopes of an old commune property — one of the earliest commercial Chardonnay plantings on the South Island.
Neudorf helped define what world-class New Zealand Chardonnay could be. The Home Block Moutere Chardonnay is now widely regarded as one of the three great New Zealand Chardonnays, alongside Kumeu River and Te Mata. Pinot Noir, Riesling and Sauvignon Blanc followed, all shaped by dry farming and a deep respect for site. The estate is now certified organic, solar-powered and family-run.
Tim Finn — a founding member of Sustainable Winegrowers New Zealand and a Fellow of the New Zealand Wine Institute — passed away in 2024, leaving behind a legacy that shaped Nelson and modern New Zealand wine.
Today, daughter Rosie Finn leads the estate alongside winemaker Todd Stevens and viticulturist Stef Brockley, continuing the family's quiet pursuit of excellence, one vintage at a time.
